FTAA for Beginners Workshop

Download the workshop in Acrobat PDF format.

Updated in February 2004 with information about CAFTA, this two-hour popular economics education workshop looks at the rules and the rulers of the global economy. It uses people's own experience of NAFTA and globalization as a starting point, then moves to the institutions that are shaping the global economy. NAFTA case studies from Mexico, the US, and Canada point to the emerging targets of new trade agreements — public services, environmental protections, and worker rights. The workshop ends with the January 2004 anti-FTAA protests and other ways to create a Fair Trade Area of the Americas.

This workshop encourages trainers to select from a variety of problem-posing activities and presentations based on the needs and circumstances of the participants.

  • Share information about the rules and outcomes of NAFTA.

  • Place yourself on a global timeline of significant trends and events of the
    last 100 years.

  • Review the trade “landscape" of the leading trade treaties and institutions including recent information about the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA).

  • Play a “Jeopardy” game of FTAA facts and figures.

  • Explore efforts to promote fair trade principles in international trade treaty negotiations and identify specific steps that each of us can take.
